On April 3, 1853, the Unterlinden Museum officially opened its doors. It presents works such as the 3rd-century mosaic discovered in Bergheim, the Isenheim Altarpiece, and the Dominican Altarpiece by Martin Schongauer, seized during the French Revolution.
Today, the museum offers visitors dialogue, knowledge, emotion, and pleasure through a journey spanning nearly 7,000 years of history, from prehistory to 21st-century art.
At the heart of its archaeology, fine arts, and history collections, visitors discover the many facets of its architecture, unified and enhanced by the 2015 renovation by Herzog & de Meuron.
As you explore the former 13th-century convent, the 1906 municipal baths, and the contemporary extension, you’ll witness the evolution of a story spanning over 170 years.
