Het verhaal
De basiliek van San Lorenzo herbergt een juweel van grote waarde: de Medici-kapellen. Een begraafplaats voor leden van de Medici-familie, ze staan bekend om de graven van Giuliano en Lorenzo de 'Medici, gemaakt door Michelangelo in de Nieuwe Sacristie, een meesterwerk van Renaissance-architectuur en sculpturen, die de kunstenaar heeft gemaakt op basis van het plan van de sacristie van Brunelleschi, later de Oude Sacristie genoemd. De structuur werd voltooid in 1524, met witte muren en stenen details.
De Medici-kapellen zijn verdeeld in drie verschillende delen: de crypte, de kapel van de prinsen en de nieuwe sacristie. In de crypte werden minder illustere familieleden begraven. De kapel van de prinsen wordt bekroond door een grote koepel ontworpen door Buontalenti en begon in 1604, maar eindigde pas in de twintigste eeuw. Hier werden zes groothertogen van Toscane begraven. Dit mausoleum is een zeldzaam voorbeeld van de barokstijl in Florence; het weelderige interieur, volledig bedekt met marmer en halfedelstenen, werd opgevat als een monument voor de grootsheid van de Medici.
