Het verhaal
Het Cultureel Centrum van Belém (Centro Cultural de Belém, ook wel CCB genoemd) ligt aan het centrale plein van Belém. Het centrum werd begin 1988 gebouwd om het Portugese voorzitterschap van de Europese Unie in 1992 te verwelkomen. Het gebouw is ontworpen door de architecten Vittorio Gregotti (Italië) en Manuel Salgado (Portugal) en werd vanwege de opvallende moderne architectuur naast het historische Jerónimos-klooster in eerste instantie met gemengde gevoelens ontvangen.
Sindsdien is het een cultureel centrum met tal van internationale tentoonstellingen (van fotografie tot mixed-media-installaties), culturele evenementen en congressen. Het is ook een kunstcomplex met het grootste auditorium van de stad.
