Sicily is just 90 minutes away from Malta by high speed catamaran – and a day trip to the Italian island is an experience like no other. You'll get to discover Mount Etna – Europe's highest volcano – and the quintessential Sicilian town of Taormina sitting pretty above the bay below.
First up you'll have the chance to explore the slopes of Mt Etna, the continent's most active volcano. The climb up to the crater takes you through picturesque villages and an ever-changing landscape. The lower slopes are extremely rich and fertile with groves of oranges, lemons, almonds and peaches. Further up you'll see historic lava flows and even snow in the colder months.
Historic Taormina is located atop sloping sea cliffs. Undoubtedly this is one of Sicily's most beautiful towns, with an ancient Greek theatre overlooking the coast below and medieval and Renaissance palaces. The view from Piazza IX Aprile takes in the beaches up and down the shore. Stop here for a coffee and watch daily life unfold.
