Corfu's cuisine, bustling town square and old fortress are the highlights of this half-day guided walking tour. You'll start at the Old Fortress of Corfu, a Venetian fortress dating back to the early 15th century, with some eye-catching views over the town. Eleni, one of our expert local guides, says “this fortress gives you a peek into Corfu's rich history. Keep an eye out for its two peaks – Castel a Terra, or Castle near the Land, and Castel a Mare, which means Castle by the Sea in English. They really show off the military defence architecture from the Venetian era.”Next, you'll stroll through the old town's winding alleyways, known as kantounia, towards Greece's largest plaza – Spianada Square. As you wander between the pastel-coloured buildings, you'll make a few stops to sample local treats, like ouzo and kumquat liqueurs. Setting off from Paleokastritsa, we'll cruise north west towards Porto-Timoni double bay, where we'll stop for a while. Next up, we'll head for Diapoulo Island to spend some time swimming and jumping from the rocks. After this we'll make our way to Mathraki Island where there's a pristine sandy beach, and a chance to have lunch at a local fishermans taverna. Then we'll start making our way back, stopping off at the beautiful twin beach.

The inside story
A testament to a bygone era, the Achilleion Palace is one of Corfu’s most popular attractions for a reason. It was built by Empress of Sisi of Austria in the 1890s after a family tragedy as a retreat where she hoped to find comfort and solace. Inside, you’ll find mementos of her life in elegant reception rooms. But the star of the show is the lavishly decorated staircase in a hallway adorned with scenes from ancient Greece. Outside, the classical-inspired gardens are studded with statues and cypresses. The grounds also offer panoramic views over Corfu town, the coastline and even mainland Greece. After Sisi’s death, Germany’s last kaiser bought the palace and his legacy lives on in the tiny strip beach below the palace named after him.
