The inside story
Take a trip into the dark and mysterious past of the Georgian times with a visit to the spooky chambers of the Edinburgh vaults. Hidden beneath the busy old town are 19 arches which form part of the South Bridge.
The arches were originally used by local businesses of cobblers, workshops and taverns but after 30 years the poor construction resulted in them being abandoned. This gave way to the opportunity for the darker residents of the Scottish City to use the hidden spaces for illegal gambling, whiskey distilleries and, some even say, for body snatchers to hide bodies!
