The inside story
Standing proudly in Princes Street Gardens, the Scott Monument is one of Edinburgh’s most iconic landmarks. The 61-metre-high Gothic memorial – built in honour of the much-loved Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott – is one of the tallest monuments dedicated to a writer. Inside, there’s an exhibition where you’ll be able to learn about the life and legacy of the writer. A climb to the top guarantees sweeping views over Edinburgh and beyond.
Built between 1840 and 1844, the striking monument is known for its sharp black arches which dominate the city’s skyline. Marvel at the 68 intricately carved figures depicting characters and scenes from Scott’s novels. If you have time, conquer the 287 steps to the top of the tower and see the city from a new perspective – tiring yet rewarding.
