De tour begint met een korte rit naar de uitlopers van de Vesuvius en de ruïnes van Pompeii, een oude stad die bewaard is gebleven dankzij de uitbarsting van de vulkaan. Je wandelt over de geplaveide straten naar het Forum dat ooit het middelpunt van het Romeinse leven was. Eeuwenoude paden leiden je naar indrukwekkende villa's en ruimtes zoals het Huis van de Faun met zijn adembenemende mozaïeken. Dan neem je even plaats in de arena van het theater. En je kijkt je ogen uit op de kolossale zuilen van de Basiliek. Ook bezoek je gebieden waar het dagelijks leven zich afspeelde, zoals de baden en tavernes. Je bekijkt de buitenkant van Casa della Regina Carolina, een van de grootste villa's van Pompeii in een elitebuurt bij het Forum. Hier kom je meer te weten over het lopende onderzoek dat is gestart door National Geographic Explorer Caitlin Ellis Barret. En je hoort verhalen over de villa en de dagelijkse huiselijke activiteiten van de welgestelde bewoners. Na een lichte lunch ga je naar de haven van Torre Annunziata, waar je afdaalt onder straatniveau naar het oude Oplontis. Deze site bevat met zijn twee uitgestrekte villa's een paar van de best bewaarde muurschilderingen uit de Romeinse periode. Oplontis heeft dan ook een plekje op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO veroverd. Terwijl je de wonderen van Oplontis bekijkt, vertelt je gids die ook een archeoloog is je meer over de historische, culturele en architectonische context. Op deze plek woonde vroeger de Romeinse elite. En dat zie je wel aan de fresco's en mozaïeken in Pompeïaanse stijl die zijn afgewerkt met diep azuurblauw, oranje en zonnig goud. Het ingenieuze gebruik van kleur en schaduw geeft de schilderingen een driedimensionaal effect. Hierdoor lijken deze oude scènes net levensecht.
