The inside story

The Red Square is the central square in Moscow, separating the Kremlin from the historic merchants quarter of Kitay Gorod and has been a favorite location for the occupants of the Kremlin to hold public ceremonies. Contrary to popular belief, its name has little to do with the famous red colored bricks, but derives from the old Russian word for beautifully, aptly applied to the imposing architectural structures found in the square.

Nowadays the Red Square is closed to traffic and can typically be found bustling with business people to tourists snapping shots of the top highlights in Moscow. One of the main entry points is through the first gateway, originally built in 1680, it was later replaced with a replica in 1995 after its removal by Stalin for military parades. In the square you will find the Lenin Mausoleum, the State Historical Museum, GUM store and Kazan Cathedral. To the south is the brightly domed Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral.

After a visit during the day, make sure to also see the square at night when the streets have emptied. The nights awe inspiring astmosphere features the illuminated Kremlin and St Basils cathedral.
