The inside story
Lunar landscapes, black volcanic sands and red cliffs make Santorini a natural gem that draws visitors to the charming island of Santorini year after year. Multiple eruptions over the years have transformed Santorini into a five-island archipelago; consisting of Santorini, Therasia and Aspronisi and the Kameni islands at the centre made of entirely black lava. This volcanic zone is the most dynamic in the South Aegean and visitors have the chance to visit the active volcanoes on the islands of Therasia and Nea Kameni – known to locals as the Volcano.
The eruption was also responsible for one of the greatest calderas in the world – the edge of a volcanic crater – now lined by traditional blue-roofed houses that mesmerise all who visit. From the caldera, stunning views across the turquoise waters and neighbouring islands can be seen and you’ll get a glimpse of the island’s geographical history.
