The past comes to life in Syracuse – a city packed with classical heritage as well as flamboyant Sicilian baroque architecture. You'll visit the Greek theatre, go into the Ear of Dionysius and explore Ortygia island, the heart of the old town and location of baroque gems such as the cathedral.
With more than 2,700 years of history behind it, Syracuse is one of Sicily's most fascinating cities. Your journey through time kicks off at the Archaeological Park in the west of the city. Discover the Greek Theatre, which held 15,000 spectators in its heyday, and still awes despite the ravages of time. There's also the Altar of Hiero – a massive sacrificial slab – the Ear of Dionysius as well as the Roman amphitheatre.
You'll then cross the bridge to Ortygia island. Its labyrinthine streets are packed with churches, palaces and castles. A guided tour will take in all the top attractions, including the cathedral. You'll then have a couple of hours of free time to explore at your own pace.
