The inside story

Isola Bella, literally meaning "Beautiful Island", is one of the three islands that make up the Borromean Islands and is nothing short of beautiful. Situated on Lake Maggiore in north Italy, Isola Bella is a popular tourist attraction that is a must see for those visiting the area. Known for its picturesque panorma of the lake, the island is home to a grand palace, marvelous terraced gardens, and a small fishing village.

Back in the early 17th century, Carlo III of the Borromeo family began construction of the Palace on the island and dedicated it to his wife, Isabella, in which the island got its name. After construction was stopped for some time, the sons of Carlo III restarted works on the garden and palazzo. Many famous architects and designers worked on creating this national treasure and it wasn't until 1959 that all works were officially completed.

Discover the Palazzo Borromeo (Borromeo Palace) on a guided tour. Explore this Baroque palace; including over 20 rooms of rich, historically furnished rooms and lavish salons filled with priceless artworks. In the Sala Napolean, you can see the bed that Napolean slept on in 1797 during his visit to the island. Head to the Galleria Berthier and admire the mosaic of over 130 paintings which includes masterpieces and top-level artworks of the great masters of the past.

A series of six underground rooms, representing grottoes, were designed in 1865 by Vitalino VI Borromeo, that will transport you from the fairy-tale palace to the world famous gardens. The Italian-style gardens are laid out in ten terraces, full of statues, beautiful landscaping, and even wandering peacocks, adding grace to this enchanting spot. Filled with exotic plants and fountains, the views of the lake from the main garden will leave you speechless.

The fishing village on the island has restaurants and souvenir shops for those who get hungry while on the island or want something to help remember their visit.

Just a quarter mile away from the town of Stresa across the Gulf of Borromeo, Isola Bella can be reached easily by ferry or boat from Stresa, Arona, Baveno, and Verbania. Visitors coming by car are suggested to drive to Stresa and park near Piazza Marconi. The island is open to the public from March to November 1, with the Palace and Gardens open everyday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the last entry at 5:30 PM.
