The inside story
The Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes is an impressive 15th century Franciscan monastery established in the center of the Jewish neighborhood of Toledo by Isabel and Fernando, the 15th-century Catholic monarchs of Spain. They chose Toledo as the home for this monastery because Toledo had been the capital of the ancient Visigoth Kingdom. They wanted to assert the glory of the Catholic faith over that of the Jewish faith by placing it in the heart of the Jewish quarter. You will most certainly be overwhelmed by the beauty of the monastery's two-story cloister with its unique mixture of late Gothic architecture below and Mudéjar architecture above. Conveniently located near Madrid in the charming city of Toledo, don't miss out on a visit to San Juan de los Reyes on your trip to Spain.
