Un poco de historia

Scotland has scores of alluring museums, but its National Museum is something else. The all-encompassing museum allows you to discover the country’s rich past through a collection of science, technology, natural history, world and culture. No wonder it’s one of the UK’s most popular visitor attractions.

The museum was formed in 2006 when the former Museum of Scotland and the neighbouring Royal Museum were merged to form a single attraction. Entry is free and it’s set in the centre of the city, within walking distance of other major sights – win-win.

There’s a dazzling amount to see here. At the heart of the museum is the Grand Gallery. This marvellous Victorian hall opens onto the four-storey Window on the World, showcasing over 800 extraordinary objects, like the not-to-be-missed Millennium Clock. Then there’s The Lewis Chessmen, one of the museum’s must-see collections. Journey back in time to the prehistoric era through a virtual reality experience and learn about science and technology at the hands-on discovery zone.

There’s plenty of options for a hungry belly. Splurge at the award-winning rooftop Tower Restaurant, famed for its spectacular views. Or delve into national specialties – like haggis and fish and chips – at the Museum Brasserie. Overlooking the Grand Gallery, the Balcony Cafe is a popular spot for a cup of tea or coffee and a snack. You can pick up some quirky souvenirs at one of the museum’s three gift shops – a treasure trove of Scottish crafts, jewellery, toys and books.
