Perched on a cliff overlooking the Gulf of Asinara on the northwest coast of Sardinia, Castelsardo is just as dramatic as it sounds. You'll spend the morning there, exploring the old town before stopping by Castello dei Doria where you can pay a little extra to go inside if you want and delve a little deeper. There's a Sardinian aperitif overlooking the marina, plus, there's also a photo stop at Elephant Rock on the way there.
You'll drive along the coastal road, stopping by Elephant Rock – which, true to its name, is a rock that oddly resembles an elephant. And after arriving in Castelsardo, you'll catch the shuttle bus up to the top of hill from where your tour will start. You'll meander your way through the cobbled alleys of the historic centre to the castle – which also hosts a basket-weaving museum – and catch sight of the sea-facing cathedral.
After you've soaked up the main sights of Castelsardo your guide will take you to a stylish terrace bar called Il Portico. It's an artistic space, crafted by Salvatore, its creative owner, with authentic Sardinian touches everywhere you look. Relax and enjoy a Sardinian -inspired spritz or a glass of local Sardinian wine, served with a selection of traditional snacks including pane carasau, Bosa olives and Sardinian cheeses. Round off the trip with some free time to visit the castle, grab lunch at one of the many traditional restaurants, or browse the little shops in the old town before you head back down the hill.
