The inside story
Sailed since prehistorical times, the river Rhine is both a dividing natural border, and also a commercial link between different areas of Europe: the Alps, the Middle-European hills and the lowlands on the Atlantic. Throughout the millennia different cultures and cities have grown on its sides, making today its shores one of the most populous urban areas of the world, centers of culture and finance.
The Rhine may be sailed up or downstream to discover its beauties: the sharp alpine peaks in his higher section, great for excursions, and the Rhine Falls, Europe's greatest waterfalls. It's middle section, with wild nature along it's numerous bends, and the Ruhrgebiet, with many major German cities famous for their cathedrals, architecture and the UNESCO world heritage sites. The lower section in Holland, renown for windmills and tulips. The delta, visited for its natural beauty and the "polders", the lands reclaimed from the sea.
