The inside story
The Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic Hall) is a concert hall on the western tip of the HafenCity quarter of Hamburg. The hall was officially inaugurated with concerts and a light show on January 11, 2017. It combines innovative architecture, as the new glassy construction resembles a water wave, in an exceptional location and outstanding acoustics.
Swiss architect firm Herzog & de Meuron designed the Elbphilharmonie on top of the Kaispeicher, which was an old warehouse dating back to the 1960s that used to store Cocoa beans. Currently, the building itself contains a hotel, luxury apartments, restaurants, a health and fitness center, and a public plaza which offers a 360° panoramic view of the city. Elbphilharmonie is the tallest inhabited building in Hamburg standing 354 feet high.
