What to expect

This self-guided tour begins at the Kourion Archaeological Site entrance. Your first stop is the House of Eustolios, where you will learn about the ancient history of Kourion and its significance today. Next, you'll visit the amphitheater, where thousands of people once watched theatrical and musical performances.

As you continue walking through the ruins, learn about Kourion's Golden Age, and the roles of famous figures like Alexander the Great and Ptolemy in its history, before going to the Kourion aqueducts. Then, stroll through the Agora, or “gathering place”, where bustling markets and assemblies once drew thousands of the city's residents. Get some insight into the architecture of this place before continuing on to the Public Baths, once the site of lavish, heated pools where citizens relaxed and conversed with good friends. But the most impressive baths are yet to come. These, you'll find at the Roman Nymphaeum, built of stunning white marble.

After that, visit the Gladiator House featuring a mosaic depicting a gladiator battle, where you will learn the real history of gladiators before going to the House of Achilles. Then it's on to one of the earliest Christian Basilicas, dating back to the fifth century. Finally, learn about some other key sites to see in the city, and about the devastating earthquake that struck Kourion. End the tour with the tale of how the city disappeared from memory for centuries before being rediscovered.

Caledonia Waterfalls tour with hike and Cypriot lunch

The lush, cool forest that carpets the Troodos Mountains is an ideal escape near Paphos. A perfect contrast to the beach, you'll journey along a scenic route into the hills, where your destination is the village of Platres. Here, you'll set off on a 3km hike along the stream to the Caledonia Falls, followed by a traditional lunch at Psilo Dendro restaurant. Andri, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘You'll enjoy the journey as much as the destination on this hike, which follows and criss-crosses a stream over a series of little bridges all the way to the waterfall.'We'll get the tour started on a refreshing note with a stop at Kolossi Fruit Garden. Here you'll have the chance to try some fresh lemonade and buy fruit before continuing further into the mountains to the pretty hilltop village of Platres. This is the starting point for the nature trail, which traces the bubbling Kryos Potamos stream through the trees. You'll be glad of sturdy footwear as you head along the scenic trail, which is quite uneven in places with some rocks, roots and rivulets to keep it interesting. It's a forest walk in dappled shade, leading through a variety of gnarly trees including pines and strawberry trees. Once you reach the Caledonia Falls, you'll be able to take a break - and have a paddle if you wish - at the shaded freshwater pool, then continue to the famous Psilo Dendro restaurant with its very own trout farm. Relax over lunch – needless to say, trout is a speciality – and end the day on a high.

Half-day Troodos Mountains village tour with art museum visit
Excursions & day trips

Half-day Troodos Mountains village tour with art museum visit

Leave the lure of Paphos' beaches behind as you head west into the Troodos Mountains to understand the art and soul of this region of Cyprus. First up is a visit to the small, olive tree-lined village of Platanisteia. The place's claim to fame is the 20th-century artist Hambis Tsangaris, who lived and worked here in the 80s. You'll tour the printmaking museum that he established, see his work and learn about his inspirations, from the Cypriot landscape to folk stories and war. From here, you'll begin climbing into the foothills of the Troodos Mountains, making your next stop at the little village of Arsos. It's set among the many vineyards of this wine-making centre, giving it a rustic feel that gets stronger as you see the terracotta rooftops and brightly painted shutters of the houses here. Pull up a chair and relax for a morning coffee at one of the local cafes. Don't be surprised to find a few of the local gents playing tavli, or backgammon, at the next table. Finally, you'll take scenic mountain tracks to reach a dense forest. Hiding among the pines is the Medieval Tzelefos Bridge, a Venetian stone bridge over the Diarizos River. It's a great place to grab a selfie and then take a wander in the woods, where you can breathe in the wild herbs that grow along the river before returning to Paphos.
